Overview

Original Hotcake House, nestled in the heart of Portland at 1002 SE Powell Blvd, stands as a timeless diner that embraces the classic American breakfast tradition with authenticity and warmth. This cozy spot is known for its generous portions and comforting flavors, making it a cherished destination for locals and visitors seeking satisfying morning or anytime meals.

The standout here is undoubtedly the hotcakes—thick, fluffy, and cooked to perfection with just the right crisp at the edges. Whether you dive into the iconic Four Pancakes or the Strawberry Hot Cakes, the taste is consistently memorable, far surpassing typical homemade attempts. These hotcakes are paired beautifully with various omelettes, including the Mexican Omelette rich with spices, and the Hawaiian Omelette loaded with ham and pineapple, offering a savory-sweet balance that delights the palate.

Beyond breakfast, Original Hotcake House offers heartier fare like their Chicken Fried Steak and Eggs, as well as a solid lineup of burgers and sandwiches for lunch and dinner. The Ultimate Burger and French Dip are customer favorites, showcasing simple, clean flavors that elevate comfort food to a satisfying level. Steak aficionados will appreciate options like the Top Sirloin or Cube Steak, which round out the menu with classic diner robustness.

The atmosphere is lively and unpretentious—an inviting grease spoon vibe with a friendly staff that makes every visit feel welcoming. The addition of a back dining area has expanded seating while preserving the diner’s nostalgic charm. Though parking can be limited and the restrooms could see improvement, these small issues don’t overshadow the overall experience.

Original Hotcake House appeals especially to those who cherish tradition and hearty, well-executed diner cuisine. It’s ideal for anyone who values comfort food done right—from early risers craving a strong coffee and fluffy hotcakes to late-night diners seeking substantial portions without fuss. The jukebox and bustling, communal energy add to the genuine, no-frills appeal.

In sum, Original Hotcake House remains a staple in Portland’s dining scene, delivering classic flavors with care and consistency. Its enduring popularity is a testament to its ability to offer a true taste of American diner culture, satisfying both the appetite and the soul.

This was a great place to eat. The service was great and the food came out as ordered. My only dissatisfaction was a bathroom that had no working toilet and faucet. The jukebox was wonderful with a great selection. The prices were about on point with other places. I would definitely recommend stopping here.

The food is fantastic here! Pancakes at home never come close to the taste of these pancakes . Also they have one of the best burgers I have had in a long time the flavors are simple and that’s what makes the food comforting and delicious. I love stoping by for coffee and pancakes as treat to myself

Good food, huge portions and friendly staff. This is a greasy spoon, Waffle House of the west if you will but with better food and service and no fights. Says 24 hours but I believe they now close at 11pm. Pricing on their website is very outdated. Biscuits and gravy are a must order! It’s a lot of food for sure! The pancakes are not to be missed either. Good anytime of the day, not been disappointed yet!

The limited parking space has always been a bit of a hassle, which kept us from coming back for a while, but after several years, we decided to give it another try. The overall atmosphere is just like it used to be, but we noticed a new addition—an extra room was created in the back right corner, with 5 or 6 table seats, or maybe even more. It’s still the same setup as before, where you order while standing in line and then take a seat. We had the Big 'D,' Hawaiian Omelette with pancakes, a large soda, and coffee. The patty in the Big 'D' was juicy and delicious, with the meat juices sealed inside. The Hawaiian Omelette was creamy on the inside, filled with ham, pineapple, and other ingredients, and it was delicious! The side hotcakes were a little on the smaller side, but in general, the pancakes here are huge, thick, and incredibly fluffy—by far the best compared to others. All the dishes are big in portion, so there’s plenty to enjoy. As usual, the place was bustling with customers today. 02/28/2025 (Fri) Rib Eye Steak w/ Hotcakes ($23.95) French Toast Special w/Beef Patty ($13.95) Coffee ($3.95), Lrg Soda ($4.50) 03/07/2025 (Fri) Hotcakes Four ($11.50) Mexican Omelette ($16.95)

I heard of this restaurant on Tiktok and I was influenced to come check it out as it's only 13 minutes down the road. This classic breakfast place did not disappoint classic breakfast food like pancakes, eggs, and the like done on the griddle cooked with just the right amount of crunch around the edges I'll be back again for this one!

All right this place is very good, my dad has been here before and he's vegan and not too many vegan options so he was only able to get hash browns, but not the end of the world it's really not a vegan place. I got the bacon cheeseburger with Fry's and the burger was very good, it was a normal size nothing big nothing small just a normal size bacon cheeseburger but it was good. Prices aren't too bad, with a drink and food came out to like $19 for one person. Got our food within 10 minutes and the place was somewhat busy so highly recommend this place for a decent meal
